The shutdown of a device, process, or circuit
Authorized personnel must follow established procedures to disconnect energy or shut down machines, equipment, processes, or circuits. The operator or technician may need to shut down the machine in sequence to ensure that potential hazards and machine damage are minimized.
Isolate the power source of the device
Disconnect equipment from all external hazardous energy sources
Locate all the energy isolators listed in the LOTO program one by one
Adjust these devices to stop the energy flow of the device
PPE may be required
Common energy isolation technology: close the valve, open the circuit breaker
Energy isolation of equipment
All operating controllers must be closed or returned to neutral by authorized personnel.
Energy isolation devices must be used to prevent unintentional opening of valves, switching or other operations on equipment/systems by others.
The ball valve is in the closed position and locked
Energy isolation requires that switches, valves, and other controllers be in separate or closed positions
The valve controller is in the closed position awaiting installation of the LOTO unit
