Device specific LOTO programs must be posted on or as close to each machine as possible
The posted LOTO program
The label on the device refers to the LOTO program that has been posted
Equipment to prevent LOTO failure is LOTO specific
The switch in the upper left image requires special attention when developing device-specific LOTO programs:
When LOTO is applied only to switches that are located on the control panel cover, LOTO will fail by opening the control panel cover (as shown in the upper right image). The spring-loaded key (2) is pulled out and the switch (3) can be opened with a screwdriver or other tool.
To ensure the integrity of the LOTO, the control panel cover must serve as the necessary LOTO locking point, as shown in the upper left (4, not yet locked).
When the control panel cover has this switch (5) on the side, it can render the switch device inoperable when the panel cover is opened. However, some designs may still have exposed shaft rods, making them easy to operate when the panel cover is open.
Any such device must be considered when writing device-specific LOTO programs to determine whether the panel cover should be used as a lock/punctuation.
