Here's another example of a lockout-tagout case: A technician maintains a hydraulic press in a metalworking plant. Before commencing maintenance work, technicians ensure that proper lockout-tagout procedures are followed to ensure their safety during maintenance. They first identified the hydraulic cylinders that needed to be locked out, and then notified everyone in the area that the equipment was being locked out. They then disconnected power to the press and removed any residual pressure from the hydraulic system. They then lock the main disconnect switch using the designated locking device and verify that the switch and all energy sources are fully isolated. Next, technicians carried out maintenance work, avoiding the risk of the press starting up unexpectedly. When the job was complete, they removed the locking device, reconnected the power to the press, and performed a functional test to ensure the press was working properly before leaving the area. Thanks to their adherence to lock-out, tag-out procedures, the technicians were able to carry out the maintenance work safely without any serious accidents or injuries.
